Psychotherapy that Brings Results
Chronic Illness and Pain Therapy at Resilience Psychology
Living with chronic illness or chronic pain is an experience that puts a daily strain on your sense of self and relationships. Saying “I’m fine,” or having to push through may not only leave you feeling worn down and exhausted, but feeling at the end of your rope. Other symptoms of managing your chronic condition may include:
- Feeling misunderstood or isolated by others who do not live with chronic conditions
- Grief over adjusting to a new diagnosis or new normal
- Feelings of regret, guilt, or shame about the chronic condition and its daily impacts on self and others
- Constant feelings of fear, anxiety, jealousy, envy, or depression
- Fixation on the unfairness of life and situations because of chronic conditions
- Avoidance of people, places, or situations that may potentially worsen symptoms

Benefits of Therapy for Chronic Illness and Pain
Studies show that chronic illness or pain can be exacerbated by emotional stressors or trauma. Psychotherapy aims to target this mind-body connection with the belief that healthier coping with emotional stressors and trauma processing can also help the body feel better. With specialized training in health psychology and as a certified Pain Reprocessing Therapist, Dr. Dawson will work with you to:
- Assess for potential neuroplastic pain
- Safety reassurance for reinterpreting pain signals that may be uncomfortable but not dangerous
- Apply techniques such as somatic tracking and mindfulness to better understand the quality and intensity of pain
- Explore and address emotions (e.g., anger, shame, sadness) and trauma, including adverse childhood events (ACEs) at the root of pain signals
- Develop ongoing tools for coping, communication, and stress management
Discover new responses to chronic illness and pain.
Never let the things you cannot do prevent you from doing the things you can.

FAQs
As a good fit with your therapist is a key part of therapy, Resilience Psychology offers a complimentary 20-minute phone consultation to understand what brings you in and how we may be of service to you. From there, we will schedule an initial session to get to know each other, gain a better understanding of your present problems and therapeutic goals, and start working together.
Therapy appointments typically occur on a weekly basis and at the same day and time. Intensive sessions are also available. All appointments are offered via HIPAA-compliant telehealth platforms and available across Colorado and 41 other states via PsyPact.
Treatment length depends on your goals and unique circumstances. While some clients benefit from a single intensive session, many benefit from ongoing individual therapy sessions. Contact us today to discuss your personalized treatment plan.
Resilience Psychology is in the process of becoming an in-network provider with Aetna and United Healthcare. As plans vary, it is recommended that you check with your insurance provider for specific coverage details before your first session. Please be advised that insurance companies require a diagnosis for treatment. Private pay options are available for clients who would like to ensure maximum privacy. For clients with other insurance coverage, a superbill that you may submit directly to your insurance company for possible reimbursement can be provided.
Please cancel appointments 24-hours before your appointment time. Appointments cancelled after the 24-hour period will be charged the full fee except for emergencies.
You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost. Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. We are happy to provide a Good Faith Estimate so please ask before you schedule an item or service. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. For more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call CMS at 1-800-985-3059.
As it is hard to cover comprehensive information in an FAQ, please use the contact form to reach out and we will respond right away.
